This is a great piece of practical writing. I work small orgs (under $20M) and find that these tools can still be useful but need to be adjusted slightly.

I do think the Blue Ocean Strategy can be a good thinking tool for orgs to use when they are at a transition point. Even if they don't end up in a blue ocean, they may get themselves to a less red ocean.

Thank you so sincerely! This is exactly why I've been working on this series for the last few weeks. Sounds like we've had a similar experience. Agreed about the value of this particular tool relative to small firms that have arrived at inflection points.

Curious, what's another well-known book or strategy that would be good to cover in my series?

Another one of my favorite tools from the world of Futures Thinking is the Three Horizons framework. I've used it to help founders think through business model changes they will need to make in the future.

I really appreciate your practical take on some of these concepts, John. Books with big ideas don’t usually need to be followed exactly, and you show some great ways to mix some of these concepts together to get the most from them. Thanks for some nice inspiration this morning!

There's very little new under the Sun.. but that doesn't mean there isn't opportunity to create something new or a new way of delivering unique market value.
